Love them or hate them, the hashtag is here to stay across all social media realms but how should we be using them on Instagram? Should we even be using them?

The answer is a resounding YES, you definitely should be using hashtags on your Instagram posts. Just one hashtag could help your post be seen by hundreds more people who are searching for that particular tag.

Did you know that as well as following accounts, Instagram users can now follow hashtags too? In fact, give it a try today. Not only will you discover a wealth of content that will interest you, you’ll be opened up to accounts that you will adore and would never have found otherwise.

How do hashtags work?

Essentially, hashtags help content discovery by organising and sorting posts into categories that users can easily find. You can add up to 30 hashtags on each post but it is important to make sure they are relevant to your content. If, for example, you upload an image of a recent mini smile makeover then tags like #transformation, #whitesmile, and #smilemakeover will attract users looking for the type of image you are posting. However, using popular and overly broad tags such as #likeforlike or #instagood can appear spammy and desperate, and won’t target the followers you really want.

Gain some insight

By using the Instagram insights you can see whether your hashtags are working for each of your posts and you can then use this knowledge to improve each time. If, however, this all sounds a little too in depth, never fear because HI Marketing is here. We love looking at insights and we use these on a daily basis to improve the posts for our clients so that every single one is working as hard as it should be.
